I became familiar with this workbook when I was in graduate school studying to become a therapist. It was recommended to me by a Child Advocacy Center employee. I am now a licensed therapist and use the activities in this workbook often with young clients who have been sexually abused. Some of the activities seem to be more helpful than others, and they should only be used with a client whose abuse has been disclosed and substantiated. I have used the paper dolls activity the most, with kids of varying ages, and they seem to love it. Some of the activities are educational, and some are experiential and allow the client to release any negative thoughts and emotions. The activities can also be used with family members of the abused child. I recommend this book to anyone working with children and teens who have experienced sexual abuse. This book is my go-to resource for activities to treat sexually abused children. I am an agency-based mental health counselor who has been treating this population for more than 10 years and this is still my favorite activity book. There are activities for use in individual, family, or group work. The book is also neatly divided by intervention focus and age group, so it is easy to find an activity to address a specific topic easily. The activities can also be easily modified to address other types of trauma as well. I recommend this book to anyone treating traumatized children.I also recommend the following books as well:This is a must have book for those who work with children having been sexually abused or assaulted. The only downside I saw to this book was that it was focused for older children more than the pre-school age or younger. There are very few books with therapeutic exercises for those who were sexually abused or assaulted. This book is one of the few rare ones. I would recommend this book! This book is an amazing resource for any therapist treating children and/or adolescents. I have been using this book for years and it is a go-to when working to incorporate an activity into any stage of trauma therapy. The activities also add some excitement for kids when they are addressing such complex trauma, allowing them to feel safe and both cognitively and emotionally heal from abuse. When I was an intern it was scary thinking about meeting with my very first awesome kid that was overcoming a not so awesome thing.. Then a seasoned counselor handed me "Paper Dolls and Paper Airplanes" and told me to look for an activity based on the child's age. It was a wonderful first session and I can never thank Liana Lowenstein enough for her books. I have used this book over and over and the pages are wearing thin.. I highly recommend this book for anyone working with children that have overcome abuse.I have just started working with children with PTSD and was looking for a book that would be non-threatening yet informative, using exercises that would help a child deal with sexual abuse. I liked this book because there were exercises that could be used as games and follow the gamet from informing the child about sexual abuse to helping them deal with the abuse. Caregivers can be very nervous about a therapist delving into this topic also, and this is an easy resource to use when talking to parents.I am an outpatient therapist and I recently bought "Paper Dolls and Paper Airplanes." There are a variety of exercises and ideas to use with both individuals and groups. The ideas have been used by other therapists and are creative and thoughtful. I would love it if the book were spiral bound so it would be easier to make copies of the various card decks used in the exercises.Excellent resource for my practice. I have already used many activities from this book-wish I had it soonerI bought this book for my daughter who is a social worker. She is very happy with it. The price was very affordable. Recommend this book seller.Maybe this is a bit of a specialist book but if you work with traumatised children it's a must.As a therapist working with sexually abused children I have found this book to be an invaluable resource. The exercises are clear and concise and can be put together to provide a bespoke therapy for each client. Fantastic!Good book for group therapy for children who have been sexually abused.
